We need access to your microphone to detect the pitch of your instrument.
Click 'start tuning' on the violin tuner above to get started.
The microphone of your device (laptop, tablet or smartphone) recognizes which violin string you play and indicates if it's too low, too high or in tune, so you can tune your violin properly.
You got this! The first time you tune your violin might take a while and might even be a bit scary. Know you'll get used to it and it will be a quick routine soon.

Start with the A string (use a tuning fork or the reference tone). Then tune D, followed by G, and finally E. This order minimizes the need for retuning.
Use fine tuners for small adjustments (within a few cents). Use pegs for larger pitch changes. Always turn pegs slowly and carefully.
Plucking gives a clearer initial pitch for tuning. Bowing can help you hear if the pitch is stable once you're close to in-tune.
Violins go out of tune with temperature changes. Always check your tuning before playing, especially after bringing your violin from a cold environment.
New strings take time to settle. They'll go flat quickly at first. Tune up, play a bit, then tune again. Repeat this process several times.
The violin has four strings tuned in perfect fifths. From lowest to highest, they are:
Note: These frequencies are based on A4 = 440 Hz, which is the modern standard. Some orchestras use A4 = 442 Hz or 443 Hz.
