Click 'start tuning' on the violin tuner above to get started.

The microphone of your device (laptop, tablet or smartphone) recognizes which violin string you play and indicates if it's too low, too high or in tune, so you can tune your violin properly.

How to Use this Free Online Tuner for Violin:

  1. 1.Click on 'start tuning'
  2. 2.You'll get a pop up from your browser asking to allow to use the microphone. Click to allow, so the violin tuner can pick up the note you're playing and tell you if it's in tune.
  3. 3.Play the A string on your violin with the bow and hold the note for a while while watching the tuner. I recommend starting with the A string, then D, G and E.
  4. 4.Watch the needle of the tuner. It will recognize the string and tell you if it's too low or too high.
  5. 5.Tune your violin: when the note is too high, you need to turn the fine tuner to the left to make the note lower. When the note is too low, turn the fine tuner to the right to make the note higher. Click here for my video tutorial on how to use the fine tuners and pegs of your violin to tune.
  6. 6.Check constantly if you've reached the right note, so you're not tuning your violin too much. Continue until the pitch is correct and then move to the next string.
  7. 7.
Tip: The best is to bow while you turn the fine tuner, but this might be difficult in the beginning. As a beginner violinist you might be going back and forth bowing checking the tuner.

You got this! The first time you tune your violin might take a while and might even be a bit scary. Know you'll get used to it and it will be a quick routine soon.

Violin Tuning Tips

Tune in Order: A-D-G-E

Start with the A string (use a tuning fork or the reference tone). Then tune D, followed by G, and finally E. This order minimizes the need for retuning.

Fine Tuners vs. Pegs

Use fine tuners for small adjustments (within a few cents). Use pegs for larger pitch changes. Always turn pegs slowly and carefully.

Bow or Pluck?

Plucking gives a clearer initial pitch for tuning. Bowing can help you hear if the pitch is stable once you're close to in-tune.

Room Temperature Matters

Violins go out of tune with temperature changes. Always check your tuning before playing, especially after bringing your violin from a cold environment.

Stretch New Strings

New strings take time to settle. They'll go flat quickly at first. Tune up, play a bit, then tune again. Repeat this process several times.

What are the Violin String Notes?

The violin has four strings tuned in perfect fifths. From lowest to highest, they are:

G
196 Hz
4th string (lowest)
D
293.7 Hz
3rd string
A
440 Hz
2nd string
E
659.3 Hz
1st string (highest)

Note: These frequencies are based on A4 = 440 Hz, which is the modern standard. Some orchestras use A4 = 442 Hz or 443 Hz.
